By setting aside a few minutes each month during the new moon phase to focus on your desires, plans and goals, will help give you clarity of mind and fill your heart with promise. Remember, energetically the universe is working with you when you set intentions to a new moon.
I’m not a “rule” person, however, so what follows will be some suggestions for getting the most out any new moon, but follow your own soul’s leading because that’s what’s right for you. You can get very elaborate with moon rituals or keep it as simple as writing a quick list of intentions.
A quick warning – any intentions stated or written down does carry power, so please take care in considering those things that you truly want. The saying “Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it” is fair warning whenever setting your new moon intentions into motion.
That said, let’s get started.
I personally use stones in all my spiritual work. With the new moon I’ll often make a grid, something that supports the work I’m doing this month. Last month was creativity, so I did a grid using a lot of orange stones to work with my sacral chakra, this month I’m working on inner peace, so I’m working with more teals and pale blues in stones. Labradorite or quartz are also fantastic stones for working with intentions.
If you do monthly altars, this can be a good time to change them up. I do use altars, but I don’t keep a schedule for them, I put them up when I feel God’s leading, and I change them when I feel the same. An alter is simply a space set aside to focus your intentions, beliefs, and gratitude for the month or season. The ritual of putting them up in the cycle of new moon to new moon can be lovely.
This is also a good time to smudge, or anoint, your space if you don’t do that on a regular basis. It’s something simple that will refresh the energy of your home. I personally anoint all the entry points of my home (doors and windows) with an essential oil, praying for the safety of those inside and claiming protection over the space.
I will usually light some candles and put on music, even if I’m doing this process outside. Make yourself comfortable, a few deep breaths and even a glass of wine is nice. Remember this is sacred time for you so take it and make it special for yourself.
I truly believe in the power of rituals. I think rituals connect us to God in deeper ways and when we participate in them, we are blessed.
I want you to start this particular ritual with a small gratitude practice for all you’ve seen happen since the last new moon. Now if this is your first time doing this process, then you can be generic in your gratitude. We all have so much in a month to be thankful for, but if you’ve been setting intentions already, then be specific about gratitude for what’s manifest into your life from your intentions of last new moon.
And on that note, setting intentions…
For this process, I have a leather journal with handmade paper, but whatever you’re comfortable with, can afford, and feels right in your hands, works! Open your notebook, and date the page then write down these words – “I allow these things into my life now, either manifesting as I ask them, or as something better, for my highest good and for the highest good of all concerned.”
Put it in your own words, but keep the essence of the statement intact.
Below that, begin writing down your intentions, what you want to see come into your life, and things you plan to change or orchestrate for yourself this month. What you will find is in the practice of writing these things down, you will be more conscious and intentional going forward. There is commitment with yourself and God involved here and I always find that if I include something in my new moon intentions, I work just a little bit harder to fulfill it then I might otherwise.
Last month one of the intentions I set was to hydrate better as I’d gravely fallen off the water drinking wagon. At the time of this writing, I’m back to drinking about two liters a day and feeling much healthier. In other months I’ve set intentions for my work, creativity, relationships, and health. So your intentions really can be anything.
Try to keep it simple, especially if this is your first time. I don’t want you setting yourself up for a fall if you can’t see these intentions through, or if you end up feeling pressured to do something about everything on your list. I usually choose two or three things at the most, but there have been some months I’ve gone as high as five, but that’s usually because something is lingering over from last month.
It’s also fine to write a master list of all the things you want to see happen or change in your life, then simply pick one or two each month to focus on.
This is an ongoing ritual so whatever doesn’t happen this month, you can renew the intention next month. When things do manifest, then you can move up something from your master list into the spotlight.
Keeping a journal like this, for me, keeps me focused, and reminds me of how much I have to be grateful for, but some people prefer to write their monthly intentions on paper, and then burn the paper. Fire can be a powerful part of any ritual, so do what you feel most called to.
That’s really it for setting the intention. I always end in prayer and thank God, my guides and angels for all the ways they will assist me this month. You can either tuck the notebook away, or keep it on hand to look at throughout the month as you work towards your intentions, but remember the most important part of this is to allow these things into your life. Be open to the spiritual realm, it’s leading and it’s abundance. Remember these things in prayer and meditation and follow any guidance you receive.
It may not seem like much, but this ritual is quite powerful and if you commit to it for three months, I think you’ll see rich blessings pouring out of this.
Be well and be blessed and happy new moon!
